Our first time hosting our annual pre-orientation bootcamp on Zoom was a success! Thank you to the speakers: Professor Douglas McNabb, Professor Geoffrey Corn, and Monica Ortale for helping prepare the incoming 1Ls for their first week! We hope it was useful and helped get some of the first day of law school jitters out of the way.
Congrats to HLSA's 2020-2021 Executive Board for being sworn in! The new officers officially take office on May 18th. Check out our Instagram @hlsa_stcl for the full recap of our first swearing in via Zoom!

NOVEMBER IS THE MONTH OF GIVING!Every month, Mexican American Bar Association Houston members visit Victory Early College High School to mentor a group of high school students. This Thursday, these students will take a break from their high school routine to explore a day in the life of a law school student at South Texas College of Law Houston.
Students will participate in a mock class, take a campus tour, and have a Q&A mentorship lunch with MABAH/HLSA members. Our goal is to encourage these students to pursue higher education and hopefully a career in the legal field DiscoverLaw.org has graciously sponsored the Q&A lunch. Let’s show these students our support — sign up below to answer any questions the students might have about what it’s like being an attorney, a law student, or what it took to get where we are. This is a group of 40-50 students so we welcome all of you to participate as a tour guide, mentor, or both! When: Thursday, November 15th. Where: Tour begins at 11 AM in Emilie Slohm Conference Room. Volunteer schedule: 11:00 - 11:30 A.M. Campus tour 11:30 - 1:15 Q&A Lunch (lunch is served at 11:30 but feel free to stop by whenever) How do I sign up? 1. RSVP at www.mihlsa.com/rsvp 2. Comment on what you want to volunteer for (tour guide/mentor/both) Check our social media for more updates! HLSA at STCL had an eventful week that ended on a great note! Last Wednesday, Victoria Giambra, Supervising Attorney for Catholic Charities, led an engaging discussion on immigration law and on what we can do as law students to help those affected by the ongoing immigration crisis. ***A key takeaway: REGISTER TO VOTE by Oct. 9 and show up to the ballots! *** Finally, the Sports & Entertainment Law Society joined us to kick off Hispanic Heritage month at the Astros game this Sunday. We had a ball of a time and look forward to seeing everyone at our next event! Come celebrate Mexican Independence Day with HLSA and the Sports & Entertainment Law Society this Sunday, September 16, at the Astros Hispanic Heritage Street Fest! The game will be preceded by live music, food, beer, games, and a special on field Mariachi performance.
A valid ticket for that day is required for entry. We have 20 tickets available for sale first come first serve. Payment details will be emailed upon receiving RSVP. Location: Center Field Gate and Left Field Gate. Also includes access to certain parts of the ballpark upon entry, including Torchy's Tacos, Saint Arnold Bar, Budweiser Brew House, and the Crawford Boxes. Great turnout at our first general meeting. It was good to see lots of 1L's join us! If this is any indication, this year will turn out to be amazing! |
